Our commitment
We aim to make the encyclopedia readable by everyone, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard alone, or text enlargement.
Standard and conformance status
- Target standard: the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.2), level AA.
- Conformance status: partially conformant. This means that some parts of the content do not fully conform to the standard. They are listed under "Known limitations".
- Evaluation method: Self-evaluation with an automated tool (axe-core 4.10, WCAG 2.2 AA rules) on a sample of pages in both languages: an entry page, the home page, search, a type index, the glossary and open data. The tool found no violations. A manual screen-reader test has not yet been carried out
- Date of last evaluation: 2 November 2026
What we apply
- Sufficient contrast between text and its background.
- Keyboard navigation on every page, with a clear highlight on the selected element.
- Well-ordered headings that screen readers can follow.
- Alternative text for every image or graphic that carries information.
- Correct text direction:
- Right to left in Arabic.
- Left to right in English.
- Proper handling of foreign words within Arabic text.
- Pages that adapt to mobile devices and accept text enlargement without breaking.
- Respect for the "reduce motion" setting on the visitor's device.
Known limitations
- Charts are static images. Each chart is accompanied by a table of its data, which screen readers can read.
- English fragments within Arabic text: some are not yet marked with their language, so a screen reader may read them with Arabic pronunciation. We are working on marking them.
- PDF documents from third parties: we link to them as sources, and do not control their accessibility. Where a web-page version exists, we give its link.
If you encounter a barrier
- Write to us at chitour1@gmail.com, and state the page, the barrier, and the device or browser you are using.
- We reply within 3 working days.
- If the barrier cannot be fixed quickly, we send you the content in a format that suits you.
