License and Reuse

Text

The text of the encyclopedia is available under a Creative Commons license: Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0). This means:

  • You may copy, republish, and adapt the text, including for commercial purposes.
  • On condition that you attribute it to "The World Encyclopedia of AI" with a link to the entry.
  • And that you publish anything you derive from it under the same license.

This license does not cover images, logos or trademarks, unless stated otherwise in the image's rights line. See the next section.

Data

  • The structured data of the entries is available under CC0, that is, without restrictions. It includes names, dates, relations, and lists of sources.
  • It can be downloaded from data/encyclopedia.json.

Images, logos and trademarks

  • The encyclopedia publishes real photographs, and displays organizations' logos and icons in their entries.
  • The encyclopedia's license does not cover third-party images, logos or trademarks. The text license (CC BY-SA 4.0) and the data license (CC0) do not extend to them.
  • Every image has a rights line shown with it: its creator, its source, and its license. Reuse of the image is governed by that line, not by the encyclopedia's license.
  • Charts and explanatory graphics produced by the encyclopedia are under the same license as the text, unless stated otherwise in the image's rights line.
  • A screenshot shows an interface owned by others, so the rights in what appears in it belong to their owners.
  • A logo is its owner's trademark. It is displayed only to identify the organization, and does not mean that the organization sponsors or endorses the encyclopedia.

Quotation

  • Quotations from sources are short and attributed.
  • Their rights belong to their owners, and so they are not covered by the encyclopedia's license.

External sources

Links to sources do not mean that their content is available under the encyclopedia's license.

Use in AI training and retrieval systems

Using the encyclopedia's texts and data to train AI models or in retrieval systems is subject to the same license terms, including attribution to the encyclopedia and sharing derivative works under the same license.
