What the Encyclopedia Covers

ما يدخل الموسوعة وما لا يدخل

The encyclopedia gathers and organizes published knowledge about artificial intelligence. It publishes no original research, issues no compliance judgments, and does not rank companies or models in competitive lists.

What is included

An entry is created for anything that meets three conditions:

  1. Reference value: it is covered by reliable independent sources, not only by its own announcements.
  2. A clear identity: it can be told apart by name, date and responsible body.
  3. Usefulness: a researcher, journalist, policymaker, technical reader or general reader needs it.

This includes:

  • Concepts and methods used by specialists.
  • Models, systems, tools and hardware.
  • Datasets and benchmarks.
  • Organizations: companies, labs, universities, government and international bodies, and non-profits.
  • People with a documented impact on the field.
  • Laws, strategies and standards in every country.
  • Documented incidents, cases and events.
  • Influential works: research papers, reports and books.
  • History: defunct technologies and projects that shaped the field.

Inclusion criteria by type

These criteria add to the three conditions above. Anything that does not meet them may be mentioned inside another entry.

Type What makes it worth a separate entry
Concept Specialists use it with a specific meaning in peer-reviewed research, reference books or official documents. A marketing label used by a single organization is not enough.
Technology (model, system, tool or hardware) It has actually been released, and its developer has documented it in a technical paper, model card or official page, or reliable independent sources have covered it. Something announced but not available is mentioned in its developer's entry. A minor version is mentioned in its family's entry, unless it has a separate documented impact.
Dataset or benchmark It is published, and its description is documented: its size, origin and license. Others than its creator have used it in published work, or an official body relies on it.
Organization It develops, regulates, funds or researches AI, with a documented impact in independent sources. Mentioning AI in its marketing is not enough.
Person A substantial documented contribution: influential research, leadership of an influential organization, or a public role in policy and regulation. Living persons with care: their public work only, and a level 1 or 2 source for anything that affects reputation. Someone known for a single event is mentioned in the event's entry.
Law or policy A text issued by a competent authority, with its text published: a law, regulation, national strategy, standard or official guidance. A bill is included if it has been formally introduced and covered by reliable sources.
Document or work It is widely cited, or it changed the direction of research or policy, or it was issued by an official body and had a documented impact.
Incident or event An incident: harm that occurred or nearly occurred, reported by at least two reliable sources or by one official source such as a ruling or an official investigation, with a documented link to an AI system. An event (a release, a regulatory decision or a milestone) is included if it had a documented impact beyond the day it happened.
Country or region It has an AI strategy, law, competent body, or activity documented in reliable sources.
Comparison or study It brings together entries that are actually published, using stated criteria, and answers a question the reader needs. It does not rank the parties competitively.

What is not included

  • Advertising, and products mentioned only by their makers.
  • Forecasts and plans presented as facts. They are attributed to whoever made them.
  • Daily news that changes nothing documented.
  • Personal information about people beyond their public professional activity.
  • Full texts of copyrighted works.

Stubs

A short sourced stub may be published for something mentioned in other entries, so that links to it are not empty. It is labelled as a stub and expanded later.

Absence from the encyclopedia

The encyclopedia is still being built. Absence from it does not mean something is unimportant or does not exist.
