Data, Knowledge and Information Engineering

البيانات والمعرفة وهندسة المعلومات

This chapter gathers what concerns data and structured knowledge: the data lifecycle, data quality, knowledge representation in graphs, data rights and privacy, and interoperability. It differs from Chapter 5 in treating the material on which models are built rather than the models themselves, and from Chapter 7 in not addressing hardware and computing infrastructure.

6.1Data LifecycleThe stages of data from collection, cleaning and labelling to storage, splitting, archiving and disposal, and the data-engineering practices needed to train and evaluate models0
6.2Knowledge Graphs and OntologiesRepresenting knowledge in structured forms: knowledge graphs, ontologies and semantic schemas, and their construction, extraction from text and maintenance0
6.3Synthetic Data and SimulationGenerating synthetic data for training and testing, simulation and its environments, and the benefits and risks of this approach such as model collapse and the reproduction of bias0
6.4Quality, Documentation and ProvenanceData quality criteria, documentation tools such as datasheets, tracking of provenance and lineage, and checking datasets for bias0
6.5Privacy, Federated Learning and AnonymizationTechnical protection of personal data: differential privacy, federated learning, anonymization, confidential computing, and the risks of extracting data from models0
6.6Data Rights, Text and Data Mining, and CopyrightThe legal frameworks of data: copyright, text and data mining, licences, fair-use exceptions, ownership of outputs and the claims of content owners0
6.7Interoperability and Shared ResourcesAgreements for exchanging data and knowledge between systems: exchange formats, persistent identifiers, shared vocabularies, open resource repositories, and principles of discoverability and reuse0
