Measurement, Evaluation and Testing

القياس والتقييم والاختبار

This chapter gathers the methods for measuring, evaluating and testing systems: frameworks, metrics, benchmarks, stress testing, audit, impact assessment and reproducibility, that is, everything that allows judging a system's performance and reliability on evidence. It differs from Chapter 11, which treats safety, security and alignment as technical problems; here the concern is the tools and methodologies, not the subject of the risk itself.

9.1Measurement Frameworks and Reference MetricsGeneral concepts and frameworks of measurement: defining quality and performance, types of metrics, evaluation design methodology, and the validity and limits of measurement0
9.2General-Task BenchmarksBroad reference benchmarks that measure the general capabilities of models: comprehension, language, reasoning, knowledge and coding, how they are built, test-data leakage and result saturation0
9.3Specialized BenchmarksBenchmarks dedicated to particular domains: medicine, law, finance, programming, science, Arabic and other languages, built with the participation of domain experts0
9.4Evaluating Agentic SystemsEvaluating agents: measuring completion of long tasks, tool use, level of autonomy, agent behaviour in interactive environments, and evaluating multi-agent systems0
9.5Stress and Robustness TestingExamining system behaviour under difficult conditions: distribution shift, noisy or anomalous inputs, edge cases, high load and endurance tests0
9.6Red Teaming and Security BountiesOrganized offensive evaluation: red teams, methods for uncovering vulnerabilities and harmful behaviours, security bounty programmes and responsible-disclosure policies0
9.7TEVV, External Audit and Conformity AssessmentIndependent verification and audit: methodologies of testing, evaluation, verification and validation, external audit bodies, and conformity assessment against standards and legislation0
9.8Impact AssessmentAssessing impact before and after deployment: social, rights-related, environmental and economic impact, estimation methodologies, consultation of stakeholders, and impact reports0
9.9Reproducibility, Open Science and Benchmark SnapshotsEnsuring evaluation results can be verified: reproducibility, open-science practices, documenting evaluation environments, fixing result snapshots, and controlling test-data leakage0
